Guide: how to teach your parrot or budgie to talk

What this tool does

Teach it to talk is a word trainer for birds. You can record your voice saying a word or phrase, play it on a loop so your bird hears it many times and keep a dictionary of everything it can already say and when it first said it.

How it works

Tap record, say the word and save it. Then choose how many times it repeats and how often. When your bird says it, mark it as learned and it moves to the dictionary. The tool uses the microphone only while you record, and recordings are saved on your device.

How birds learn to talk

Parrots and budgies imitate sounds around them to be part of the flock. At home, you are the flock. That's why they learn best the words they hear often, said with emotion and linked to a situation. Not every bird talks, and that's normal: some prefer whistling or mimicking noises.

Among the species that learn most easily are the African grey, the Amazon and the budgie, which can learn dozens of words. Cockatiels tend to be better whistlers than talkers.

Training tips

  • Short sessions: 5 to 10 minutes, two or three times a day, when your bird is calm and alert.
  • One word at a time: choose short, happy words like its name, "hello" or "pretty bird".
  • Context: say "good morning" every morning when you uncover the cage and "bye" when you leave. It learns when to use them.
  • Enthusiasm: birds respond to emotion. Use a cheerful tone.
  • Reward: when it tries to imitate, praise it and give a bit of fruit or extra attention.
  • Patience: some birds take weeks or months to say their first word.

Common mistakes

Shouting or repeating words angrily teaches exactly that. Covering the cage or leaving it alone as punishment doesn't help either: birds are very social and loneliness stresses them. And watch what's said at home: many birds accidentally learn the phone ringtone, the microwave beep or a word you'd rather not hear in front of guests.

Frequently asked questions

Do female budgies talk?

They can, but males usually talk more and more clearly.

At what age do they start talking?

Many birds start between 3 and 12 months, though it depends on the species.

Can I leave the recording playing all day?

It's not a good idea. Short sessions and real interaction work better.

Will two birds talk less?

Sometimes, because they communicate with each other. But they'll have company and be happier.
