Guide: how to train your puppy week by week

What this tool does

Puppy school is a step-by-step training plan for your young dog. Each week it suggests short lessons on the most common problems: stopping biting, going potty in the right place, sitting, coming when called, walking on a leash and staying alone without crying. You can check off completed lessons and see its progress.

How it works

Enter your puppy's age and the tool shows the lessons that fit that stage. Each lesson explains what to do, how long to practice and which mistakes to avoid. Sessions last five to ten minutes, several times a day, because puppies learn best in short bursts.

The principles of good training

  • Positive reinforcement: reward what you want repeated, with food, petting or play. Punishment creates fear and harms your bond.
  • Consistency: everyone at home should use the same words and rules.
  • Timing: the reward must come the second it does the right thing, not a minute later.
  • Patience: accidents and setbacks are normal. What matters is the trend.

Common problems and how to handle them

Nipping: puppies explore with their mouths. When it bites hard, stop playing for a few seconds and offer a chew toy. It learns that biting hands ends the fun.

Potty accidents: take it out when it wakes up, after eating, after playing and before bed. Reward as soon as it finishes in the right spot. If there's an accident, clean with an enzyme cleaner and don't scold.

Socialization: between 3 and 14 weeks of age your puppy is in its most important window for getting to know the world. Introduce people, sounds, surfaces and vaccinated dogs in a calm, positive way. Ask your vet how to do this safely before vaccines are complete.

Track its vaccines in the vaccine record, work out its portion with the daily food tool and, when it's ready to go out, plan outings with the walk planner.

How to tell it's making progress

Look at the week's trend, not one bad day. If there are fewer accidents, it comes faster when called or settles more quickly after play, you're on the right track. If after several weeks you see no progress, or growling or intense fear appear, consult a trainer who uses positive methods.
